    Welcome Wahoos Swimmers!

Welcome to the 2023 Wahoos Swim Team!

We are 10 days away from the start of practice and can't wait to get the season started!  We currently have 115 swimmers registered and anticipate about 125 swimmers total.  Registration closes on Friday, May 12th, so please remind any friends to get their registration in this week.

You will receive additional information on swim meets, team photos, volunteer jobs, etc. after practices begin. This email will help you and your swimmers prepare specifically for the first day of practice. There is a lot of info here, so please read all the way through so your child can have a great first day! We share ad-hoc updates via our Wahoos Instragram page as well.

    First Week of Practice

    • Monday - Friday, May 15th-19th
      • 10 & under 4:00-5:00pm
      • 11 & up 5:15-6:30pm
      • The first week will include basic assessments, team bonding, technique introduction, and general organization.
      • The assessment on Monday is intended to assess your child's current swimming abilities so we can put them in a group with like-swimmers.
      • In practice on Tuesday, your child will be introduced to their specifically assigned coach and practice group/color/lane.
    • Remember that not every practice is required, as we know there will be conflicts.  For children on year-round swim teams, do your best to pick and choose when to attend conflicting practices.  MSA is one of our sponsors this year, and we work with them closely to try to avoid one another's practices as possible.  Please do let us know if you'll miss the first day so we can schedule your child's assessment later in the week. Once your child's coach is assigned, we also suggest that you text them if you know your child will be missing a particular practice.
    • The water will still be pretty cold in May. The coaches will keep the kids moving and having fun, but we'd recommend a sweatshirt for your kiddos for once they get out of the pool.
    • The first few days will be a little crazy! Please remember that our leadership team consists of parent volunteers and our coaches are college students. We appreciate your grace and patience while we get up and running.
    • We will have an optional parent meeting on Monday, May 15th at 6:30pm by the picnic tables. We will try to also host an optional parent Zoom meeting later that evening - details TBD.

    Swimmer Goals

    • Each child is at different levels of swimming, and we know we have many new families this year. Wahoos is fun and should be stress-free. We want our swimmers to learn to love the sport of swimming, and swim meets are friendly competition. We have goals in place for each age group:
      • 6 and under - Swim 25m freestyle at meets and find joy in the sport.
      • 7-10 years - Swim 1-3 events (25m/100IM relays) and to practice and develop the four strokes and apply speed. Reinforce passion in swimming.
      • 11 and up - Swim 1-3 events (50m/100 IM relays) and to apply technique, efficiency and speed together and set an example for others in and out of the water.
    • Your children should not wear swimmies/life jackets of any kind. We will provide them with kick-boards and other swim tools for practices.

    Goggles, Cap, Towels & Apparel

    • Your child should bring swim goggles. TYR and Speedo are trusted brands and we recommend them. Your child will have more fun and an easier time swimming when they have quality goggles that don't leak. Many of our youngest swimmers are fans of TYR Swimple goggles which can be found on Amazon for $13.
    • Your child will be provided a Wahoos latex swim cap at no cost (silicon can be purchased for those with latex allergies or preference for silicon) at the first practice. We recommend using a sharpie to write your child's name on the cap.
    • Your child will be provided a Wahoos towel at the first practice, but they are welcome to use whatever towel they prefer. Some of our swimmers have gotten their towels embroidered with their name, but this is a personal preference.
    • Your child will need to order a Wahoos swimsuit (or use a previous year's suit) and have it in-hand before 6/1. More information on ordering suits and/or getting fitted can be found here.
    • If you would like to purchase any Wahoos apparel for you and your child, the Wahoos store will be open until Monday, May 15th and you'll receive your merchandise by June 1st. Choose Paypal at check-out, but you can use a credit card instead of Paypal account.

    Coaches

    • Co-head coaches Sarah Fleury and Skylar Gruhl will be sending out a coach's note before the first day of practice to introduce themselves and share a bit more about the season.
    • Sarah and Skylar are supported by an awesome team of coaches including Ben Delmar, Aidan Williams, Ellison Fischer, Sarah Dichak, Ansley Bombien, and Caitlyn Cornell.  We are very excited to have so many returning coaches this year!
