Wahoos families,

We hope your Wahoos enjoyed the 2023 swim season. It was wonderful to see the kids having fun while learning and improving in the sport of swimming.

End of Season Recap:

• Returned to the GCSL Division 1 where the Wahoos previously competed for over 25 years prior to moving down to Division 2.
• Finished the regular season in fifth place among the 8-team GCSL Division 1 with a 3-4 record. Only a handful of points separated the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place teams.
• Took fifth place at the GCSL Division 1 All-star meet this past weekend.
• Awarded the GCSL Division 1 Sportsmanship Award as voted on by our peer teams. Everyone should be extremely proud of this accomplishment. This is a reflection of the entire Wahoos team and Weddington Swim and Racquet Club: swimmers, coaches, parents, volunteers, our team committee, even our lifeguards and parking attendants, all being friendly, kind, welcoming, organized, and gracious, good sports in competition. Our opponents noticed our kids staying in the water for fist bumps at the end of a swim heat; swimmers and parents cheering for our opponents whether it was a win or loss; receiving detailed information for visiting teams on parking, seating, CoC, food, etc.; resolving issues and disputes at meets with civility. The Wahoos have been recognized with this award many times over the years and we should all be proud to continue the tradition.
• Wahoos coaches’ awards and records were handed out at the End of Season Social. See list.

Ribbons, medals, and coaches’ awards have been filed and are awaiting pickup from the file boxes in the hallway as you enter the club house near the office.

• All award and record certificates have been reprinted due to production issues so even if you received one at the end of season social you will want to pick up the corrected version.
• We are waiting on an order of purple Best Time ribbons. We’ll send another a notice when these are completed.

A huge thanks to the Wahoos Volunteer Committee. There was 80% turnover from last season. Kristen Atkins, Joanna Labaer, Cameron Logar, Jennelle Vickers, and Jamie Zarambo all stepped into new roles and hit the ground running figuring things out and making improvements as they went. I had some availability limitations throughout the season and Kevin Warren (WSRC board rep for the pool) stepped in and did a terrific job stepping as the Co-Team Rep and making sure things were taken care of from pre-season to season conclusion.

We hope your swimmers enjoyed this season and will be excited to return to the team next year. If you know of any WSRC families that have kids that might also enjoy the Wahoos, be sure to tell them about your experience this season and encourage them to consider joining the team next year.

FYI: WSRC Board of Directors nominations are underway. Debbie Miller is stepping down and will not be running for re-election. The pool and swim team are represented on the board by Kevin Warren. The board could always benefit from additional representation from a pool and swim team friendly voice. If you’ve thought about serving on the board, you could certainly rally support from the Wahoos families.
